Word count directly impacts rankings

The Myth

"Longer content automatically ranks better in search results. Many SEO guides recommend hitting specific word counts like 2,000+ words for every article."

The Truth

Word count is not a ranking factor. Google has confirmed this multiple times. What matters is whether your content comprehensively answers the user's query, regardless of length. A 300-word page can outrank a 3,000-word page if it better serves user intent. The correlation people observe between word count and rankings is due to confounding factors: longer content often covers topics more thoroughly and attracts more backlinks, but it's the depth and quality, not the word count itself, that matters.

Word count is not a ranking factor. We don't count words on a page.

STUDY

Backlinko 2023 Study

While correlation exists between content length and rankings, causation has not been established.

EXPERIMENT

Ahrefs Test

Thin pages ranking #1 for competitive terms proves word count isn't a direct factor.

Insight from @dejanseo

"I've seen 200-word pages outrank 5,000-word guides. It's not about word count—it's about information gain. Does your content tell users something they can't find elsewhere? That's what matters."
