Duplicate content causes penalties

The Myth

"Having duplicate content will get your site penalized by Google."

The Truth

There is NO duplicate content penalty in the traditional sense. Google doesn't penalize sites for having duplicate content—it simply chooses which version to show in search results. The risk is dilution, not punishment. If duplicate content exists across multiple URLs, Google picks one version (which might not be your preferred one) and the others may not rank. Canonical tags help signal your preferred version.

Google Search Central

Duplicate content is not a penalty. Google filters similar content to show the best version.

It's not a penalty. We just have to pick which URL to show.

"Stop fearing duplicate content. Google handles it every day. Just use canonicals properly and focus on creating original value, not obsessing over duplicate paragraphs."
